JOINT STATEMENT: Wednesday, August 16, 2023

Suwannee County School District (SCSD)
Suwannee County Sheriff's Office (SCSO)

Due to the uptick in information circulating around social media platforms regarding fentanyl-laced paper money being discovered locally, this joint communication serves to inform the public of our knowledge of that information and to provide resources to our public regarding this national crisis.

Unfortunately, Suwannee County is not immune from the repercussions of the southern border crisis, which is, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, the majority source of most all illegal fentanyl in the United States. https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/department-justice-announces-results-enforcement-surge-reduce-fentanyl-supply-across-united

The most important thing you can do is to educate yourself and your household on the dangers of fentanyl and the behavioral precautions that should be taken to avoid this potentially lethal drug. Resources

Locally, both the SCSO and the SCSD have individuals trained in first aid response and the administration of potentially life-saving NARCAN, in the event of an exposure or overdose. While the sole responsibility for safety lies with each individual to prevent exposure and overdose, both of our agencies are equipped to utilize the tools necessary to render first-responder aid to citizens in the community and those within our schools.

Please consider educating yourself from information provided by local, state, and federal governmental agencies, such as this joint communication, and not relying or believing everything posted within social media platforms.
