Superintendent's Message Regarding Tropical Storm Nicole

November 9, 2022 - November 14, 2022

11/09/2022, 1:38 PM

Superintendent Ted Roush has announced that as of the date and time of this notice, the Suwannee County School District, working closely with local emergency management, consultation with the Florida Department of Emergency Management, and the National Weather Service, has made the decision to close school operations for Thursday, November 10, 2022. There will be no before or after-school activities, including athletic events, during this period of closure. The Suwannee County School District will resume regular operations on Monday, November 14. Any changes to this plan of action will be communicated prior to Monday.

The missed day (tomorrow, November 10) will be rescheduled for Monday, March 27, 2023. This date was originally scheduled to be a district-wide professional development day for employees and a day off for students. This rescheduled day is required in order to remain in compliance with State of Florida rules regarding the number of hours for required instruction annually.

A main part of the consideration for closing school for tomorrow is that we are not permitted to operate school bus transportation in the event that winds meet or exceed 35 miles per hour. Regardless of the rainfall amounts, there is a strong possibility that winds could meet or exceed the legal standard for operating school buses during periods of student transportation.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we strive to make the best possible decisions, based on the information available at a given time.
