PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Monday, 08/28/2023, 11:45a.m.
Superintendent Ted Roush has announced that as of the date and time of this notice, the Suwannee County School District, working closely with local emergency management, consultation with the Florida Department of Emergency Management, and the National Weather Service, has made the decision to close school operations for Tuesday, August 29, through Wednesday, August 30, 2023. There will be no before or after-school activities, including athletic events or practices, during this period of closure. The Suwannee County School District will resume regular operations on Thursday, August 31, weather and conditions permitting. Any changes to this plan of action will be communicated by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, through the District's website, social media, local, and regional television and radio broadcasts.
A main part of the consideration for closing school for tomorrow is that we are not permitted to operate school bus transportation in the event that winds meet or exceed 35 miles per hour. Regardless of the rainfall amounts, there is a strong possibility that winds could meet or exceed the legal standard for operating school buses during periods of student transportation. There is also an increased possibility with the approaching of a possible major hurricane, that electrical power will be interrupted and some transportation routes impassible.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we strive to make the best possible decisions, based on the information available at a given time.
