Ten students from Branford High, Suwannee Middle and Suwannee High School participated in North Florida Honor Band in January. To earn placement in the North Florida Honor Band students from six counties (Baker, Bradford, Columbia, Gilcrest, Suwannee and Union) audition and then wait for selections.
Three students from Suwannee Middle School, Hannah McDonald playing oboe, Lakota Anderson playing trumpet, and Benson Nissley playing French Horn all earned placement in the Middle School Honor Band.
Two Branford High students earned selection into the High School Honor Band: Colton Hampton playing Tuba and Sydney Holder selected as 1st chair Oboe.
Suwannee High had five students selected to the High School Honor Band: Jonathan Pope playing Trumpet, Rebecca Starling playing Clarinet, Abigail Corbin playing Flute, and Jessica Starling and Mackenzie Taylor who were selected as 1st and 2nd chair flute respectively.
Students took part in two evening practices and then an all day rehearsal with guest conductors from Flagler Palm Coast High and Driftwood Middle School. The experience concluded with a concert Jan 31st at Union County High for a packed auditorium. The ten students who participated bring back valuable knowledge and experiences to share with their classmates. This year was the first year Suwannee County Schools participated in North Florida Honor Band. All three band directors plan to continue encourage students to audition and participate in this unique experience.
