RIVEROAK Technical College (RTC) held the Capping Ceremony for the 2016-2017 Practical Nursing Program on December 9, 2016, at the Community Presbyterian Church.

Karis Rewis, Practical Nursing student, welcomed those in attendance including special guests. Fellow student, Kirsten Lee, recited a poem explaining what the cap means to practical nurses.

The guest speaker for the capping ceremony was Jenny Hurst, Risk Manager at Suwannee Health Care. Hurst, who is a RTC graduate herself, spoke to the students and encouraged them to believe in their own abilities and to trust the education they are receiving now to always guide them.

Following Hurst’s speech, the capping presentation began. Caps are a symbol of transitioning from basic care into more complicated care in the hospital setting, such as administering medications.
The students receiving their caps were: Carrie Brannen, Brittany Brock, Taylor Cashmore, Lenora Dominion, Bailey Fletcher, Malory Herron, Lakyta Jackson, Morgan Jones, Sandra Kabick, Kirsten Lee, John McGraw, Jill Poole, Macy Proveaux, Karis Rewis, Donald Sands, Kara Tomlinson, Amanda Viracheff, Bonnie Webb, Chantel Williams, and Jessica Willis.

The Shands at Live Oak Ladies Auxiliary and Altrusa presented select students with scholarships at the end of the capping presentation. Recipients of the Shands at Live Oak scholarship awards were Jill Poole, Karis Rewis, and Kara Tomlinson. The Altrusa scholarship went to Lenora Dominion.
